In the last twelve months a flood of substandard imitation products has arrived on the market to tempt customers with ‘unbelievably low prices’. Mostly imported from China and Eastern Europe, the quality of both the timbers (which contain knots, shakes, splits and sapwood) and the manufacture (low quality glue, unstable joints and poor finishing) are simply a false economy for customesr looking for beautiful wooden worktops that will last a lifetime.
Many suppliers advertise ‘prime quality’ or ‘premium quality’ when in reality they are selling second or even third grade worktops. There is also an increasing trend for companies to advertise ‘environmentally friendly’ or ‘from sustainable sources’ without any form of registered certification to support these claims. This means that at best the woods are not from responsibly managed sustainable forestry and at worst are from illegal sources.
